Or, they could have gone the other way, toward world-denying asceticism (<span data-ref=\"1ti,4,3\">1 Tim 4:3</span>; see <span data-ref=\"col,2,8\">Col 2:8</span>, <span data-ref=\"col,2,16,2,23\">16-23</span>), with the idea that enjoyment of material things is inappropriate for resurrected, spiritual persons. These teachers might have understood from Jesus’ teachings (see <span data-ref=\"mat,19,10,19,12\">Matt 19:10-12</span>; <span data-ref=\"mat,22,30\">22:30</span>) that marriage should be prohibited (<span data-ref=\"1ti,4,3\">1 Tim 4:3</span>). Their teachings on the Old Testament law (<span data-ref=\"1ti,1,7,1,11\">1 Tim 1:7-11</span>) might have led to the promotion of certain taboos. Their teachings might have involved an overly aggressive promotion of equality (see <span data-ref=\"2ti,3,6\">2 Tim 3:6</span>; cp. <span data-ref=\"gal,3,28\">Gal 3:28</span>; <span data-ref=\"1ti,2,11,2,15\">1 Tim 2:11-15</span>) in the belief that the age to come was already here. Their teaching might have focused exclusively on resurrection power, which would contradict Paul’s message of suffering and the cross (see <span data-ref=\"2ti,1,8\">2 Tim 1:8</span>, <span data-ref=\"2ti,1,12\">12</span>; <span data-ref=\"2ti,2,8,2,13\">2:8-13</span>; cp. <span data-ref=\"1co,4,8,4,13\">1 Cor 4:8-13</span>; <span data-ref=\"2co,12,8,12,10\">2 Cor 12:8-10</span>).
