\sls (We always give thanks to God for all of you, and we remember you in our prayers without ceasing;)\sls* \p \v 3 having mind of the work of your faith \add [+or mindful of the work of your faith]\add*, and travail, and charity, and abiding of the hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before God and our Father. \sls (remembering the work of your faith, and your labour, and your love, and the endurance of your hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before God and our Father.)\sls* \p \v 4 Ye beloved brethren of God, we witting your choosing, \sls (You beloved brothers in God, we knowing of your choosing, or of your election,)\sls* \p \v 5 for our gospel was not at you in word only, but also in virtue, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much plenty; as ye know, which we were among you for you; \sls (and so we brought you the Gospel or the Good News, not in words alone, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, or but also in the power of the Holy Spirit, and with great certitude; and ye know, what manner of men we were when we were among you for your own sakes;)\sls* \p \v 6 and ye be made followers of us, and of the Lord, receiving the word in much tribulation, with joy of the Holy Ghost, \sls (or with joy in the Holy Spirit or from the Holy Spirit)\sls*; \p \v 7 so that ye be made \sls (an)\sls* ensample to all men that believe, in Macedonia and in Achaia. \p \v 8 For of you the word of the Lord is published \add [or is much told \+sls (out)\+sls*]\add*, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith that is to God, in each place is gone forth, \add [or but in each place your faith that is to God, is gone forth]\add*; so that it is not need\sls (ful)\sls* to us to speak anything \sls (or so that it is not needed or necessary for us to say anything more)\sls*. \p \v 9 For they show of you, what manner entry we had to you, and how ye be converted to God from maumets \add [or from simulacra]\add*, to serve to the living God and very; \sls (For they tell about you, and how we visited you, and thereafter how ye be turned from idols, to serve the living and true God;)\sls* \p \v 10 and to abide his Son from heavens \sls (or and to wait for his Son to come from heaven)\sls*, whom he raised from death, the Lord Jesus, that delivered us from \sls (the)\sls* wrath to coming. \add [and for to abide his son from heavens, whom he raised from \+sls (the)\+sls* dead, Jesus, that delivered us from \+sls (the)\+sls* wrath to come.]\add* \c 2 \cl CHAPTER 2 \p \v 1 For, brethren, ye know our entry to you, for it was not \sls (in)\sls* vain; \p \v 2 but first we suffered, and were punished with wrongs, as ye know in Philippi, and had trust in our Lord, to speak to you the gospel of God in much busyness \sls (or to tell you about the Gospel, or the Good News, of God with much diligence)\sls*. \p \v 3 And our exhortation \add [or our teaching]\add* is not of error, neither of uncleanness, neither in guile, \p \v 4 but as we be \sls (ap)\sls*proved of God, that the gospel \em of God\em* should be taken to us, so we speak, \sls (or but as we be approved by God, that the Gospel, or the Good News, \+em of God\+em* should be given to us, and so we speak)\sls*; not as pleasing to men, but to God that proveth our hearts. \p \v 5 For neither we were any time in word\sls (s)\sls* of glossing \add [or of flattering]\add*, as ye know, neither in occasion of avarice \sls (or nor as an occasion for greed)\sls*; God is \sls (our)\sls* witness; \p \v 6 neither seeking glory of men, neither of you, neither of others, when we, as Christ’s apostles, might have been in charge to you. \sls (neither seeking praise from people, nor from you, nor from others, when we, as Christ’s apostles, might have been in charge of you or might have been a burden to you.)\sls*\add [neither seeking glory of men, neither of you, neither of others, when we might have been chargeous \+sls (or burdensome)\+sls* to you, as Christ’s apostles.]\add* \p \v 7 But we were made little in the middle of you, as if a nurse foster her sons; \p \v 8 so we desiring you with great love, would have betaken to you not only the gospel of God \sls (or would have delivered to you not only the Gospel, or the Good News, of God)\sls*, but also our lives, for ye be made most dearworthy to us. \p \v 9 For, brethren, ye be mindful of our travail and weariness; we worked night and day, that we should not grieve any of you, and preached to you the gospel of God. \sls (Because, brothers, ye remember our labour and our weariness; yea, we worked night and day, so that we would not grieve any of you, and preached to you the Gospel, or the Good News, of God.)\sls* \p \v 10 God and ye be witnesses, how holily \sls (or how devoutly)\sls*, and justly, and without \sls (com)\sls*plaint \add [or quarrel]\add*, we were to you that believed. \p \v 11 As ye know, how we prayed you \sls (or how we beseeched you)\sls*, and comforted each of you, as the father his sons, \p \v 12 and we have witnessed \sls (or and we have testified)\sls*, that ye should go worthily to God, that called you into his kingdom and glory. \p \v 13 Therefore we do thankings to God without ceasing. For when ye had taken of us the word of the hearing of God, ye took it not as the word of men, but as it is verily, the word of God, that worketh in you that have believed. \sls (And so we give thanks to God without ceasing. Because when ye had received from us the word of God, which ye heard, ye took it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which worketh in you who have believed.)\sls* \p \v 14 For, brethren, ye be made followers of the churches of God, that be in Judea, in Christ Jesus, for ye have suffered the same things of your even-lineages, as they of the Jews, \sls (or and ye have suffered the same things from your fellow countrymen, as they have from the Jews)\sls*. \p \v 15 Which slew both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and pursued us \sls (or and persecuted us)\sls*, and they please not to God, and they be adversaries to all men; \p \v 16 forbidding us to speak to heathen men, that they be made safe, that they \add [full-]\add*fill their sins \sls (for)\sls*evermore; for the wrath of God came on them into the end. \sls (forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, so that they can be saved, so that they fill their sins full forevermore; but God’s wrath hath come upon them in the end.)\sls* \p \v 17 And, brethren, we desolate from you for a time, by mouth and in beholding, \add [as in presence]\add*, but not in heart, have hied more plenteously to see your face with great desire. \p \v 18 For we would come to you, yea, I, Paul, once and again, but Satan hindered us. \p \v 19 For why what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glory? Whether ye be not before our Lord Jesus Christ in his coming? \sls (or Shall it not be you, when we stand before our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?)\sls* \p \v 20 For ye be our glory and joy. \sls (Yea, ye be our glory and our joy.)\sls* \c 3 \cl CHAPTER 3 \p \v 1 For which thing we suffered \sls (it)\sls* no longer, and it pleased to us to dwell alone at Athens; \sls (For which thing we could no longer bear it, and it pleased us to remain alone at Athens;)\sls* \p \v 2 and we sent Timothy, our brother, and minister of God in the evangel of Christ, \sls (or and so we sent Timothy, our brother, and the servant of God in the Gospel, or the Good News, of the Messiah)\sls*, to you to be confirmed, and to be taught, \add [or admonished]\add*, for your faith, \p \v 3 that no man be moved in these tribulations \sls (or so that no one be moved, or be shaken, by these troubles)\sls*. For \add [ye]\add* yourselves know, that in this thing we be set. \p \v 4 For when we were at you, we before-said to you, that we should suffer tribulations; as it is \sls (now)\sls* done, and ye know \sls (it)\sls*. \sls (For when we were with you, we said ahead of time to you, or we warned you, that we would suffer troubles; as it is now done, and ye know it.)\sls* \p \v 5 Therefore I, \em Paul\em*, no longer abiding, sent to know your faith, lest peradventure he that tempteth \add [shall]\add* tempt you, and your travail be made \sls (in)\sls* vain \add [or and our travail be made \+sls (in)\+sls* vain]\add*. \sls (And so I, \+em Paul\+em*, no longer waiting, sent to know your faith, lest perhaps he who testeth shall test you, and my labour be made in vain.)\sls* \p \v 6 But now, when Timothy shall come to us from you, and \sls (shall)\sls* tell to us your faith and charity, and that ye have good mind of us, \sls (for)\sls*ever\add [more]\add* desiring to see us, as we also you; \add [Now forsooth Timothy coming to us from you, and telling to us your faith and charity, and for ye have evermore good mind of us, desiring for to see us, as we also you;]\add*\sls (But now, Timothy hath come back to us from you, and hath told us about your faith and love, and that ye have a fond remembrance of us, always desiring to see us, as we also you;)\sls* \p \v 7 therefore, brethren, we be comforted in you, in all our need and tribulation, by your faith. \sls (and so, brothers, we be strengthened by you, in all our need and troubles, by your faith.)\sls* \p \v 8 For now we live, if ye stand in the Lord. \p \v 9 For what doing of thankings may we yield to God for you \sls (or For what doing of thanks can we give to God for you)\sls*, in all joy, in which we joy for you before our Lord? \p \v 10 night and day more plenteously praying, that we see your face, and fulfill those things that fail to your faith \add [or and fulfill those things that fail of your faith]\add*. \p \v 11 But God himself and our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, \sls (ad)\sls*dress our way to you. \sls (But God himself and our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you.)\sls* \p \v 12 And the Lord multiply you, and make your charity to be plenteous of each to \sls (the)\sls* other \add [or and make your charity for to abound together]\add*, and into all men, as also we in you; \sls (And may the Lord make your love for one another be plentiful, or to abound more and more, and for all men, as also we for you, or and also our love for you;)\sls* \p \v 13 that your hearts be confirmed without \sls (com)\sls*plaint in holiness, before God and our Father, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. Amen. \sls (so that your hearts be confirmed in holiness without fault or blemish, before God and our Father, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his people. Amen.)\sls* \c 4 \cl CHAPTER 4 \p \v 1 Therefore, brethren, from henceforward we pray you, and beseech in the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us \sls (or that as ye have received from us)\sls*, how it behooveth you to go and to please God, so walk ye, \sls (so)\sls* that ye abound more. \p \v 2 For ye know what commandments I have given to you by the Lord Jesus. \p \v 3 For this is the will of God, \sls (yea)\sls*, your holiness, that ye abstain you\sls (rselves)\sls* from fornication. \p \v 4 That each of you know how to wield his vessel in holiness, and honour; \sls (So that each of you know how to control his body with holiness, and with honour;)\sls* \p \v 5 not in \sls (the)\sls* passion\sls (s)\sls* of lust, as \sls (the)\sls* heathen men that know not God. \sls (not in lustful passions, like the Gentiles who do not know God.)\sls* \p \v 6 And that no man over-go, neither deceive his brother, in chaffering. For the Lord is \sls (the)\sls*\sls (a)\sls*venger of all these things, as we before-said to you, and have witnessed. \sls (And that no one overreach, or take advantage of, or deceive his brother, in merchandising or in trading. For the Lord is the avenger of all these things, as we said to you before, or as we warned you, and have so testified.)\sls* \p \v 7 For God called not us into uncleanness, but into holiness. \p \v 8 Therefore he that despiseth these things, despiseth not man, but God, that also gave his Holy Spirit in us \sls (or who also gave us his Holy Spirit)\sls*. \p \v 9 But of the charity of brotherhood, we had no need to write to you; ye yourselves have learned of God, that ye love together; \sls (But about the love for the brotherhood, we had no need to write to you; ye yourselves have learned from God, that ye should love one another;)\sls* \p \v 10 for ye do that into all \sls (the)\sls* brethren in all \sls (of)\sls* Macedonia. And, brethren, we pray you, that ye abound more; \sls (and in fact ye do love all the brothers in all of Macedonia. And, brothers, we beseech you, that ye abound all the more;)\sls* \p \v 11 and take keep, that ye be quiet, \add [or and give work, or busyness, that ye be quiet]\add*, \sls (or and take care, that ye be calm, or that ye live quietly)\sls*; and that ye do your need, and that ye work with your \add [own]\add* hands, as we have commanded to you; \p \v 12 and that ye wander honestly to them that be withoutforth, and that of no man ye desire anything. \sls (and that ye walk honestly, or properly, with those who be outside of us, and that ye desire nothing from anyone.)\sls* \p \v 13 For, brethren, we will not, that ye unknow of men that die, that ye be not sorrowful, as others that have not hope. \sls (And, brothers, we do not desire, that ye do not know about men who die, so that ye do not sorrow, like others who have no hope.)\sls* \p \v 14 For if we believe, that Jesus was dead, and rose again, so God shall lead with him them that be dead by Jesus. \sls (For we believe, that Jesus died, and rose again, and so God shall bring back with him those who have died as believers.)\sls* \p \v 15 And we say this thing to you in the word of the Lord, that we that live, that be left in the coming of the Lord, shall not come before them that be dead. \sls (And we say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who live, who be left alive until the coming, or the return, of the Lord, shall not go before those who have died.)\sls* \p \v 16 For the Lord himself shall come down from heaven, in the commandment \add [or in the commanding]\add*, and in the voice of an archangel, and in the trump of God; and the dead men that be in Christ, shall rise again first. \sls (For the Lord himself shall come down from heaven, at the command, and with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead who believe in the Messiah, shall rise again first.)\sls* \p \v 17 Afterward we that live, that be left, shall be ravished together with them in \sls (the)\sls* clouds, meeting Christ in the air; and so \sls (for)\sls*evermore we shall be with the Lord. \sls (Afterward we who live, who be left alive, shall be snatched up together with those in the clouds, meeting the Messiah in the air; and then forevermore, we shall be with the Lord.)\sls* \p \v 18 Therefore be ye comforted together in these words. \sls (And so comfort ye or strengthen one another with these words.)\sls* \c 5 \cl CHAPTER 5 \p \v 1 But, brethren, of times and moments ye need not that I write to you. \p \v 2 For ye yourselves know diligently, that the day of the Lord shall come, as a thief in the night. \sls (For ye yourselves assuredly know, that the Day of the Lord shall come, like a thief in the night.)\sls* \p \v 3 For when they shall say peace \em is\em*, and secureness, then sudden death shall come on them \add [+or then suddenly perishing shall come on them]\add*, as sorrow to a woman that is with child, and they shall not escape. \p \v 4 But, brethren, ye be not in darknesses, that that day as a thief catch you. \sls (But, brothers, ye do not be in darkness, so that that day shall catch you like a thief.)\sls* \p \v 5 For all ye be the sons of light, and sons of \add [the]\add* day; we be not of night, neither of darknesses. \sls (For all of ye be the children of the light, and the children of the day; we do not be of the night, nor of the darkness.)\sls* \p \v 6 Therefore sleep we not as others; but wake we, and be we sober. \sls (And so let us not sleep like others; but watch, and be resolute.)\sls* \p \v 7 For they that sleep, sleep in the night, and they that be drunken, be drunken in the night. \p \v 8 But we that be of the day, be sober, clothed in the habergeon of faith and of charity, and in the helmet of hope of health. \sls (But we who be of the day, be resolute, clothed in the breastplate of faith and of love, and in the helmet of the hope of salvation.)\sls* \p \v 9 For God putted not us into wrath, but into the purchasing of health \sls (or but unto the getting of salvation)\sls*, by our Lord Jesus Christ, \p \v 10 that was dead for us \sls (or who died for us)\sls*; \sls (so)\sls* that whether we wake, whether we sleep, we live together with him. \p \v 11 For which thing comfort ye together \sls (or For which thing strengthen ye one another)\sls*, and edify ye each other, as ye do. \p \v 12 And, brethren, we pray you, that ye know them that travail among you, and be sovereigns to you \add [or be before to you]\add* in the Lord, and \sls (who)\sls* teach you, \sls (And, brothers, we beseech you, that ye acknowledge and honour those who labour among you, and be your leaders in the Lord, and who teach you,)\sls* \p \v 13 that ye have them more abundantly in charity \sls (or and that ye have more love for them)\sls*; and for the work of them, have ye peace with them. \p \v 14 And, brethren, we pray you, reprove unpeaceable men, \add [or reprove ye, or chastise, unquiet men]\add*. Comfort ye men of little heart, receive ye sick men, be ye patient to all men. \sls (And, brothers, we beseech you, rebuke the unpeaceable, or chastise the troublesome. Strengthen men of faint heart, receive the frail, or support the weak, and be patient with all men.)\sls* \p \v 15 See ye, that no man yield evil for evil to any man; but \sls (for)\sls*evermore \sls (pur)\sls*sue ye that that is good, each to \sls (the)\sls* other, and to all \em men\em*. \sls (Ensure, that no one give back evil for evil to anyone; but always pursue that which is good, for one another, and for all \+em people\+em*.)\sls* \p \v 16 \sls (For)\sls*Evermore joy ye; \sls (Always have joy;)\sls* \p \v 17 without ceasing pray ye; \p \v 18 in all things do ye thankings. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus, in all you. \sls (in all things give thanks. For this is the will of God in the Messiah Jesus, for all of you.)\sls* \p \v 19 Do not ye quench the Spirit, \p \v 20 do not ye despise prophecies. \p \v 21 But prove ye all things, and hold ye \sls (fast, or firm)\sls*, \sls (to)\sls* that thing that is good. \p \v 22 Abstain \add [ye]\add* you\sls (rselves)\sls* from all evil species, \add [or \+sls (all evil)\+sls* likeness]\add*. \sls (Absent yourselves from anything that hath even the appearance of evil.)\sls* \p \v 23 And God himself of peace make you holy by all things, that your spirit be kept whole, and soul, and body, without \sls (com)\sls*plaint, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. \sls (And God himself, the God of peace, make you holy in everything, so that your spirit, and your soul, and your body, be kept whole, yea, without fault, into the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.)\sls* \p \v 24 God is true, that called you, which also shall do \add [\+sls (a)\+sls* work of grace in you]\add*. \p \v 25 Brethren, pray ye for us. \p \v 26 Greet ye well all \sls (the)\sls* brethren in \sls (a)\sls* holy kiss. \sls (Give hearty greetings to all the brothers with a holy kiss.)\sls* \p \v 27 I charge you by the Lord, that this epistle be read to all \sls (of the)\sls* holy brethren. \p \v 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ \em be\em* with you. Amen. \rem cat †cat*
