Tzefanyahʼs preaching helped (with Jeremiahʼs) to spark King Josiahʼs revival (621 B.C.E. — see \xt 2Kgs 23\xt*) after the wicked reigns of Manassah and his son Amon had left the people of Judah in need of a spiritual awakening. We know he prophesied before Ninevah was destroyed in 612 B.C.E. (see \xt 2:13\xt*). Mankind is in danger of being swept off the face of the earth (\xt 1:2-3\xt*). Backsliders, if they don't repent, will be destroyed (see \xt 1:6\xt*). For the great, dark, terrifying Day of the L-rd is karov (near, \xt 1:7,15-16\xt*) and hastening fast (\xt 1:14\xt*). The superstitious (\xt 1:9\xt*) and those syncretists who try to mix the faith with Canaanite, Ammonite, and Assyrian religion (\xt 1:4-5\xt*) will be destroyed, as will the complacent (\xt 1:12\xt*). \c 1 \p \v 1 The Devar \nd Hashem\nd* which came unto Tzephanyah ben Cushi, ben Gedalyah, ben Amaryah, ben Chizkiyah, in the yamim of Yoshiyahu \add (Josiah)\add* ben Amon, Melech Yehudah. \b \q \v 2 I will utterly sweep away \q all things from off the adamah, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \q \v 3 I will sweep away Adam \add (humankind)\add* and Behemah \add (beast, animal, cattle)\add*; \q for He will reduce to nothing all the elohei ha'aretz \add (g-ds of the land)\add*; \q and men shall worship \nd Hashem\nd*, everyone from his place, \q even all the coasts and islands of the Goyim. \b \q \v 12 Ye Ethiopians also, \q ye shall be slain by My cherev. \b \q \v 13 And \nd Hashem\nd* will stretch out His hand against the tzafon \add (north)\add*, \q and destroy Assyria; \q I made their streets waste, \q that none passeth by; \q their cities are destroyed, \q so that there is no ish \add (man)\add*, that there is no inhabitant. \q \v 7 I said: Surely thou wilt fear Me, \q thou wilt accept musar \add (correction, instruction)\add*; \q so that her dwelling place should not be cut off, \q despite everything for which I punished her; \q but they rose early,\f + \fr 3:7 \fr*\ft i.e., eagerly\ft*\f* \q and corrupted all their doings. \b \q \v 8 Therefore wait ye upon Me, saith \nd Hashem\nd*, \q until the Yom that I rise up for a prey; \q My determination is to gather the Goyim, \q that I may assemble the mamlachot, \q to pour upon them Mine indignation, \q even all My charon af; \q for kol ha'aretz \add (all the earth)\add* shall be devoured \q with the eish of My kina \add (jealousy)\add*. \b \q \v 9 For then will I restore to the people \q a safah berurah \add (pure language, purified lip)\add*, that they may all call upon the Shem \nd Hashem\nd*, \q to serve Him with shekhem echad \add (one shoulder, one accord)\add*. \q \v 10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My suppliants, \q even the daughter of My dispersed, \q shall bring Mine minchah. \b \q \v 11 In that Yom shalt thou not be ashamed \q for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against Me; \q for then I will take away out of the midst of thee \q them that rejoice in thy ga'avah \add (pride)\add*, \q and thou shalt no more be haughty \q because of My Har Hakodesh. \q \v 12 I will also leave in the midst of thee \q an afflicted and poor people, \q and they shall take refuge in the Shem \nd Hashem\nd*. \q \v 13 The she'erit Yisroel shall not do iniquity, \q nor speak lies; \q neither shall a leshon tarmit \add (tongue of deceitfulness)\add* \q be found in their mouth; \q for they shall feed and lie down, \q and none shall make them afraid. \b \q \v 14 Sing, O Bat Tziyon; \q shout, O Yisroel; \q be glad and rejoice with all the lev, \q O Bat Yerushalayim. \q \v 15 \nd Hashem\nd* hath taken away thy judgments, \q he hath cast out thine enemy. \q The Melech Yisroel, even \nd Hashem\nd*, is in the midst of thee; \q thou shalt not fear evil any more. \q \v 16 In that Yom it shall be said to Yerushalayim: \q Fear thou not; \q and to Tziyon: Let not thine hands hang limp. \q \v 17 \nd Hashem\nd* thy G-d in the midst of thee is gibbor; \q He will save, \q He will rejoice over thee with simchah; \q He will quiet [you] in His ahavah \add (love)\add*, \q He will joy over thee with singing. \q \v 18 They that mourn I will gather for the mo'ed \add (time of the feast)\add*, \q who are of thee [O Tziyon], \q to whom the cherpah \add (reproach\add*)\f + \fr 3:18 \fr*\ft of the Golus\ft*\f* presses upon them.\f + \fr 3:18 \fr*\ft See \+xt 2C 7:10\+xt*\ft*\f* \q \v 19 Hinei, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee; \q and I will save her that is lame, \q and gather her that was driven out; \q and I will get them praise and fame \q in every land of their boshet \add (shame)\add*. \q \v 20 At that time will I bring you again, \q even in the time that I gather you; \q for I will make you a shem and a tehillah \q among Kol Amei Ha'aretz \add (all the peoples of the earth)\add*, \q when I turn back your captivity and restore your fortunes \q before your eyes, saith \nd Hashem\nd*.
