And the malach that spoke with me said unto me, I will show thee what these are. \v 10 And the man that stood among the myrtles answered and said, These are they whom \nd Hashem\nd* hath sent to patrol ha'aretz. \v 11 And they reported to the Malach \nd Hashem\nd* that stood among the myrtles, and said, We have patrolled ha'aretz, and, hinei, kol ha'aretz is quiet, and at peace. \v 12 Then the Malach \nd Hashem\nd* answered and said, O \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os, until when wilt Thou withhold mercy on Yerushalayim and on the towns of Yehudah, against which Thou hast been angry these threescore and ten shanah? \v 13 And \nd Hashem\nd* answered the Malach that spoke with me with devarim tovim and with comforting words. \v 14 So the malach that communed with me said unto me, Preach, saying: \b \q Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os; \q I have been jealous for Yerushalayim \q and for Tziyon with a kina gedolah \add (great jealousy)\add*. \q \v 15 And I am very angry with the Goyim that are [self] secure; \q for I was but a little angry, \q and they added to the ra'ah. \q \v 16 Therefore thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \q I am returning to Yerushalayim with rachamim; \q My Beis\f + \fr 1:16 \fr*\ft Hamikdash\ft*\f* shall be rebuilt in her,\f + \fr 1:16 \fr*\ft Yerushalayim\ft*\f* \q saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os; \q and a measuring line shall be stretched forth upon Yerushalayim. \q \v 17 Preach also, saying: \q Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os: \q My towns will overflow with tov; \q and \nd Hashem\nd* shall yet comfort Tziyon, \q and shall yet choose Yerushalayim. \p \v 18 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and hinei four keranot \add (horns, powers)\add*!\f + \fr 2:1 \fr*\ft i.e., empires; see Daniel chapters 2 and 7\ft*\f* \v 19 And I said unto the malach that spoke with me, What are these? And he answered me, These are the keranot which have scattered Yehudah, Yisroel, and Yerushalayim. \p \v 20 And \nd Hashem\nd* showed me arba'ah charashim \add (four craftsmen)\add*. \v 21 Then said I, What come these to do? And he spoke, saying, These are the keranot which have scattered Yehudah, so that no man did lift up his head; but these [craftsmen] are come to terrify them, to throw down the karnot haGoyim, which lifted up their keren \add (horn)\add* over Eretz Yehudah to scatter her. \c 2 \p \v 1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and, hinei, a man with a measuring line in his hand! \v 2 Then said I: Whither goest thou? And he said unto me: To measure Yerushalayim, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof. \v 3 And, hinei, the malach that spoke with me went forth, and another malach went out to meet him, \v 4 And said unto him: Run, speak to this na'ar \add (young man)\add*\f + \fr 2:8 \fr*\ft i.e. see 2:5\ft*\f* saying: \b \q Yerushalayim shall be inhabited like unwalled cities \q because of the multitude of men and cattle therein; \q \v 5 For I, saith \nd Hashem\nd*, \q will be unto her a chomat eish \add (wall of fire)\add* round about, \q and will be the kavod in the midst of her. \q \v 6 Come, come, and flee \q out of the Eretz Tzafon, saith \nd Hashem\nd*; \q for I have scattered you \q like the Arbah Ruchot HaShomayim, saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \q \v 7 Come, save thyself, O Tziyon, \q thou that dwellest with the Bat Bavel. \q \v 8 For thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os: \q After Kavod \add (Glory)\add* sent me \q unto the Goyim who plundered you — \q the one that toucheth you \q toucheth the apple of His eye — \q \v 9 Hineni, I will surely raise Mine hand against them, \q and they shall be plunder to their avadim; \q and ye shall know that \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os hath sent me. \q \v 10 Sing and rejoice, O Bat Tziyon; \q for, hineni, I will come, \q and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \q \v 11 And Goyim rabbim shall be joined to \nd Hashem\nd* in Yom HaHu \add (that day)\add*, \q and shall be Ami \add (My People)\add*: \q and I will dwell in the midst of thee, \q and thou shalt know that \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os hath sent me unto thee. \q \v 12 And \nd Hashem\nd* shall inherit Yehudah as His chelek \q in the Admat HaKodesh \add (Holy Land)\add*, \q and shall choose Yerushalayim again. \b \q \v 13 Be silent, Kol Basar, before \nd Hashem\nd*; \q for He has roused Himself from His Ma'on Kadosh \add (holy habitation)\add*. \c 3 \p \v 1 And he\f + \fr 3:1 \fr*\ft the malach\ft*\f* showed me Yehoshua the Kohen HaGadol standing before the Malach \nd Hashem\nd*, and HaSatan standing at his right hand to accuse him. \v 2 And \nd Hashem\nd* said unto HaSatan, \nd Hashem\nd* rebuke thee, O HaSatan; even \nd Hashem\nd* that hath chosen Yerushalayim rebuke thee. Is not this a brand, a burning stick, snatched out of the eish? \v 3 Now Yehoshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the malach. \v 4 And he\f + \fr 3:4 \fr*\ft the malach\ft*\f* answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, See, I have taken away thine avon \add (iniquity, guilt)\add* from thee, and I will clothe thee with machalatzot \add (extra fine, white clothing)\add*. \v 5 And I said, Let them set a tzanif tahor \add (clean turban)\add*,\f + \fr 3:5 \fr*\ft mitznefet, \ft*\xt Ex 28:4\xt*\f* upon his head. So they set a tzanif tahor upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the Malach \nd Hashem\nd* stood by. \v 6 And the Malach \nd Hashem\nd* testified unto Yehoshua, saying: \b \q \v 7 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os: \q If thou shalt walk in My ways, \q and if thou shalt keep My charge, \q then thou shalt also judge My Beis,\f + \fr 3:7 \fr*\ft Hamikdash\ft*\f* \q and shalt also keep My courts, \q and I will give thee ways \q to walk among these standing here. \q \v 8 Hear now, O Yehoshua the Kohen HaGadol, \q thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee, \q for they are Anshei Mofet \add (men of portent)\add*; \q for, hinei, I will bring forth Avdi Tzemach \add (My Servant, the Branch)\add*.\f + \fr 3:8 \fr*\ft i.e., Moshiach Ben Dovid Yehoshua, see \+xt Jer 23:5; 30:9; 33:15; Ezra 3:8; Zech 6:11-12; Mt 2:23; Isa 4:2; 9:2-7; 11:1-12; 53:2,11\+xt*; Moshiach the new “Joshua” \ft*\xt Isa 49:8\xt*\f* \q \v 9 For hinei the even \add (stone)\add* that I have set before Yehoshua; \q upon one even \add (stone)\add* shall be shivah einayim \add (seven eyes)\add*; \q hineni, I will engrave the inscription thereof, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os, \q and I will remove the avon \add (iniquity, guilt)\add* of that land \q in Yom Echad. \q \v 10 In Yom HaHu, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os, \q shall ye invite every man his neighbor \q under the vine and under the fig tree. \c 4 \p \v 1 And the malach that spoke with me returned, and awakened me, like a man that is wakened out of his sleep. \v 2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and hinei a menorat zahav, solid gold, with an oil vessel upon the top of it, and shivah nerot \add (lamps)\add* thereon, and shivah tubes to the shivah nerot \add (lamps)\add*, which are upon the top thereof: \v 3 And two zeytim \add (olive trees)\add* by it, one upon the right side of the oil vessel, and the other upon the left side thereof. \v 4 So I answered and spoke to the malach that spoke with me, saying, What are these, adoni? \v 5 Then the malach that spoke with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, Lo \add (no)\add*, adoni. \v 6 Then he answered and spoke unto me, saying, This is the Devar \nd Hashem\nd* unto Zerubavel, saying: \b \q Not by might, nor by ko'ach \add (power)\add*, \q but by My Ruach,\f + \fr 4:6 \fr*\ft Hakodesh\ft*\f* saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os. \q \v 7 Who art thou, O har hagadol \add (great mountain)\add*, before Zerubavel? \q Thou shalt become a plain; \q and he shall bring forth the even haroshah \add (cornerstone)\add* thereof with shoutings, crying, \q Chen, chen \add (Grace, grace)\add* unto it. \b \p \v 8 Moreover the Devar \nd Hashem\nd* came unto me, saying: \b \q \v 9 The hands of Zerubavel have laid the Yesod \add (foundation)\add* of this Beis;\f + \fr 4:9 \fr*\ft HaMikdash\ft*\f* \q his hands shall also finish it; \q then thou shalt know that \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os \q hath sent me unto you. \q \v 10 For who hath despised \q the Yom Ketannot \add (day of small things)\add*? \q For they shall have simcha, and shall see \q the plumb line in the hand of Zerubavel \q with these shivah; they are the eyes of \nd Hashem\nd*, \q which run to and fro throughout kol ha'aretz. \b \p \v 11 Then I replied by asking him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the menorah and upon the left side thereof? \v 12 And I asked again, and said unto him, What are these two branches of the zeytim which through the two golden sprouts pour the gold-colored oil out of themselves? \v 13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, Lo \add (no)\add*, adoni. \v 14 Then said he, These are the two bnei hayitzhar \add (sons of oil)\add*, that stand by Adon Kol Ha'aretz.\f + \fr 4:14 \fr*\ft T.N. He said moreover, This is their\f + \fr 5:6 \fr*\ft i.e., that of ganavim and perjurors\ft*\f* appearance throughout kol ha'aretz. \v 7 And, hinei, there was lifted up a lead cover; and there was an isha \add (woman)\add* yoshevet \add (sitting)\add* inside the eifah \add (measuring basket)\add*! \v 8 And he said, This is HaRishah \add (The Wickedness)\add*. And he pushed her inside the eifah; and he pushed the lead cover over the mouth of the eifah. \p \v 9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, hinei, there came forth two nashim \add (women)\add*, and the ruach \add (wind)\add* was in their kenafayim \add (wings)\add*; for they had kenafayim \add (wings)\add* like the kenafayim of a stork: and they lifted up the eifah between ha'aretz and HaShomayim. \v 10 Then said I to the malach that spoke with me, Whither are these taking the eifah? \v 11 And he said unto me, To build it a bais\f + \fr 5:11 \fr*\ft i.e., ziggurat\ft*\f* in Eretz Shinar \add (Babylon)\add*; and it shall be placed there and set upon its own base. \c 6 \p \v 1 And I looked again, and lifted up mine eyes, and, hinei, there came arbah merkavot \add (four chariots)\add* and they were coming out from between two harim \add (mountains)\add*; and the harim were harim of nechoshet \add (bronze)\add*. \v 2 In the merkavah harishonah were red-brown susim; and in the merkavah hashenit susim shechorim \add (black horses)\add*; \v 3 And in the merkavah hashlishit susim levanim \add (white horses)\add*; and in the merkavah harevi'it speckled, powerful susim. \v 4 Then I answered and said unto the malach that spoke with me, What are these, adoni? \v 5 And the malach answered and said unto me, These are the arba ruchot HaShomayim, which go forth from standing before Adon Kol HaAretz.\f + \fr 6:5 \fr*\ft T.N. \v 2 And Beit-El had sent Sar-Etzer and Regem-Melech, and their men, to make entreaty for favor before \nd Hashem\nd*, \v 3 And to speak unto the kohanim which were in the Beis \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os, and to the nevi'im, saying, Should I mourn in the fifth month, hinnazer \add (separating myself by fasting)\add*, as I have done these so many shanim? \v 4 Then came the Devar \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os unto me, saying, \v 5 Speak unto kol Am Ha'Aretz, and to the kohanim, saying, When ye did a tzom and mourned in the fifth and seventh, even these past shivim shanah, did ye at all fast the tzom unto Me, even to Me? \v 6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? \v 7 Should ye not hear the devarim which \nd Hashem\nd* hath preached by the nevi'im harishonim, when Yerushalayim was inhabited and at ease, and the towns thereof round about her, when men inhabited the Negev and the Shefelah? \b \p \v 8 And the Devar \nd Hashem\nd* came unto Zecharyah, saying: \b \q \v 9 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os, saying: \q Administer mishpat emes. \q And let every man show chesed and rachamim to his brother; \q therefore came a ketzef gadol \add (great wrath)\add* from \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os. \q \v 13 Therefore it is come to pass, \q that as He\f + \fr 7:13 \fr*\ft \+nd Hashem\+nd*\ft*\f* called, and they would not hear; \q so they called, and I would not hear, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os; \q \v 14 But I dispersed them with a whirlwind \q among kol HaGoyim which they had not known. \q Thus HaAretz was desolate after them, \q that no man passed through nor returned; \q so will I save you, \q and ye shall be a brocha; \q fear not, but let your hands be strong. \q \v 14 For thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzva'os: \q As I determined to bring rah on you, \q when your avot provoked Me to wrath, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd* Tzava'os, \q and I relented not with rachamim: \q \v 15 So again have I determined in these days \q to do good unto Yerushalayim and to Bais Yehudah;
