\is Introduction
\ip The joyous tone of this letter is miraculous, given the fact that Rav Sha'ul is, as he is writing it, in danger of capital punishment by decapitation at anytime and without warning. But Sha'ul selflessly thinks about two quarreling women and the danger their quarrel poses to the kehillah in Philippi. He seems to have been leading up to the statement in \xt 4:2\xt*: “I appeal to Euodias and I appeal to Syntyche, think the same thing in Adoneinu.”

\v 5 In view of your deveykus \nd Hashem\nd*, your chavrusa partnership in the Besuras HaGeulah from day one until now.

\v 7 It is in fact b'tzedek for me to have hitbonenut \add (profound contemplation)\add* about you all because I hold you in my lev with hartzige \add (heartfelt)\add* sincerity, both in regard to my sharsherot \add (prison chains)\add* and in the apologetic hitstaddekut \add (defense)\add* and vindicatory work for the Besuras HaGeulah, you being all deveykus \add (attachment to G-d)\add* participators in the Chen v'Chesed \nd Hashem\nd* given to me.

\v 10 To help you approve the feste \add (excellent)\add* things of musar \add (moral discipline)\add* that matter, that you may be sincere and without michshol \add (stumbling block)\add* of blame\f + \fr 1:10 \fr*\ft \+xt 2:15\+xt*\ft*\f* in the Yom HaMoshiach,\f + \fr 1:10 \fr*\ft \+xt 1:6; 2:16\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 11 Having been filled with the p'ri Tzedek \add (fruit of righteousness)\add* through Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua to the kavod \nd Hashem\nd* and His tiferet \add (splendor)\add*.

\v 12 I want you to have da'as, Achim b'Moshiach, that the things concerning me have fallen out to an even greater advancement\f + \fr 1:12 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:25\+xt*\ft*\f* of the Besuras HaGeulah.\f + \fr 1:12 \fr*\ft \+xt 2Ti 2:9\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 13 So that my sharsherot\f + \fr 1:13 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:7\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (chains)\add* have become a hisgalus \add (revelation)\add* in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach! In all the imperial guard and the public at large! 
\v 14 And most of the Achim b'Adoneinu, having been strengthened in bitachon by my sharsherot \add (chains)\add*, are more readily willing to dare to fearlessly proclaim the Dvar \nd Hashem\nd*.

\v 15 Indeed some darshanim \add (preachers)\add* preach their derashot \add (sermons)\add* out of a ruach that is mekanne \add (jealous, envious)\add* and one of madon \add (strife)\add*; but some have derashot proclaiming Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, and these darshanim have kavvanah tovah \add (good intention)\add*. 
\v 16 These latter proclaim Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach out of a ruach of ahavah, having da'as that the purpose of my divinely destined appointment here is for the hitstaddekut \add (apologetic defense)\add* of the Besuras HaGeulah. 
\v 17 But those other ones preach Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach out of anochiyut\f + \fr 1:17 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 2:3\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (selfishness)\add*, not with a lev tahor \add (pure in heart)\add* motive, lu yetzuuyar \add (assuming)\add* by means of my sharsherot\f + \fr 1:17 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:13-14\+xt*\ft*\f* to stir up tzoros. 
\v 18 Nu? Whether the maggidim are or are not perfect in their intent, the significant thing is that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach is preached!
\p And in this I have simcha. And I will go right on having simcha! 
\v 19 For, I have da'as that through your tefillos for me and through the ezrah \add (aid)\add* given by the Ruach Moshiach, this will turn out for my Yeshu'ah \add (rescue, salvation)\add*.\f + \fr 1:19 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:28; 2:12; Ro 8:28\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 20 It is my confident tikvah that in nothing I will be put to bushah \add (shame)\add*, but with all ometz lev\f + \fr 1:20 \fr*\ft \+xt Josh 1:7\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (courage, boldness)\add* as always, even now, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach will be magnified in my basar,\f + \fr 1:20 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:13\+xt*\ft*\f* whether through Chayyim \add (Life)\add* or through Mavet \add (Death)\add*. 
\v 21 For to me to live is Moshiach\f + \fr 1:21 \fr*\ft \+xt Ga 2:20\+xt*\ft*\f* and to die is revach \add (gain, profit, hanaa)\add*. 
\v 22 But if it means I am to go on living in the basar, this for me is p'ri for \nd Hashem\nd* in the work of avodas kodesh ministry. What will I choose? I do not have da'as, 
\v 23 I am kleir \add (deliberating)\add*. I am pulled two drakhim \add (ways)\add* by a happy dilemma, on the one tzad \add (side)\add* having the desire to depart and be with Moshiach, for this is much better.\f + \fr 1:23 \fr*\ft \+xt 2C 5:8\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 24 But on the other tzad \add (side)\add* to remain in the basar is more necessary for your sake. 
\v 25 And having been convinced of this fact, I have da'as that I blaib \add (remain, continue unchanged)\add* and will continue with all of you, for your advancement\f + \fr 1:25 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:12\+xt*\ft*\f* and simcha of the\f + \fr 1:25 \fr*\ft Orthodox Jewish\ft*\f* Emunah,\f + \fr 1:25 \fr*\ft cf. \+xt 1:27; 1Ti 3:9; 4:1,6; 5:8; 6:10,21; Yd 3\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 26 With the ultimate aim that by coming to you again your glorying may abound in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua.

\v 27 Only one thing: conduct in practice your torat haEzrakhut\f + \fr 1:27 \fr*\ft see \+xt Pp 3:20\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (citizenship)\add* worthily of the Besuras HaGeulah of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear concerning you that you are standing like a ma'oz \add (fortress, bastion)\add* in one ruach, with one neshamah, contending for the Emunah\f + \fr 1:27 \fr*\ft \+xt Yd 3; Pp 4:3\+xt*\ft*\f* of the Besuras HaGeulah. 
\v 28 And, I might add, not having pachad \add (fear, terror)\add* in reaction to anything as far as the mitnaggedim \add (the ones opposing)\add* are concerned, which is a proof to them of their churban \add (destruction)\add*, but of your Yeshu'ah\f + \fr 1:28 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:19; 2:12\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (salvation )\add*, and this from \nd Hashem\nd*. 
\v 29 For to you it was given on behalf of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, not only to have emunah in him but also on behalf of him to be laden with the burden of Messianic yissurim\f + \fr 1:29 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 3:10\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (sufferings)\add*,

\v 2 Then make my simcha \add (joy)\add* shleimah \add (complete)\add* by having the same lev, the same ahavah, being an agudah association with one neshamah, thinking the same machshavot \add (thoughts)\add*,

\v 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua, 
\v 6 Who, though existing in the demut of the mode of being of Elohim,\f + \fr 2:6 \fr*\ft His etzem or essential nature, \+xt Yn 1:1-2; 17:5\+xt*\ft*\f* nevertheless Moshiach did not regard being equal with G-d as a thing to be seized,\f + \fr 2:6 \fr*\ft \+xt Gn 3:5\+xt*\ft*\f*

\v 12 Therefore, Chaverim, just as you have always had mishma'at\f + \fr 2:12 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 2:8\+xt*\ft*\f* \add (obedience)\add* concerning me, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own Yeshu'ah \add (Salvation)\add*\f + \fr 2:12 \fr*\ft \+xt 1:19\+xt*[28]\ft*\f* B'YIR'AH \add (with fear)\add* and BIRA'DAH “with trembling”.\f + \fr 2:12 \fr*\ft \+xt Ps 2:11\+xt*\ft*\f*

\v 16 Holding fast the Dvar HaChayyim. This is so that I will have reason for glorying on the Yom HaMoshiach,\f + \fr 2:16 \fr*\ft \+xt Pp 1:6,10\+xt*\ft*\f* that I neither ran nor labored L'TOHU \add (in vain)\add*.\f + \fr 2:16 \fr*\ft \+xt Isa 49:4; 65:23\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 17 And, indeed, if my neshamah is to be poured out as a nesekh \add (libation wine)\add* offering upon the korban \add (sacrifice)\add* of the avodas kodesh \add (kohenʼs service, ministry)\add* of your emunah, I have simcha, rejoicing together with you all.\f + \fr 2:17 \fr*\ft cf. \+xt Ro 15:16; 2Ti 4:6\+xt*\ft*\f*

\v 19 I have tikvah b'Adoneinu Yehoshua to send Timotiyos to you soon, that I also may be cheered up in the da'as of the things concerning you. 
\v 20 For I have no one like-minded who will emesdik \add (genuinely)\add* care for your spiritual welfare. 
\v 21 All of them are seeking their own interest,\f + \fr 2:21 \fr*\ft \+xt 2:4\+xt*\ft*\f* not those of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua. 
\v 22 But of the proven mamashus \add (real worth)\add* of Timotiyos you have da'as, because as a ben with his abba, Timotiyos served with me in the Besuras HaGeulah. 
\v 23 Therefore, I have tikvah to send him, as soon as I see how things will go with me. 
\v 24 But I have bitachon in \nd Hashem\nd* that indeed I will come quickly.

\v 25 But I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, the Ach b'Moshiach and fellow po'el \add (worker)\add* and fellow chaiyal \add (soldier)\add* of mine, but your shliach and keli kodesh \add (minister)\add* of my need.\f + \fr 2:25 \fr*\ft \+xt 4:18\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 26 I am sending him to you, because he was yearning after you all and was under zeiyar \add (extremely great)\add* stress, because you heard that he was ill. 
\v 27 For indeed he was ill, coming near to death, but \nd Hashem\nd* had mercy on him not on him only but also on me, lest I should have agmat nefesh upon agmat nefesh. 
\v 28 Therefore, I am all the more eager to dispatch him to you, in order that when you have seen him again, you may have simcha and I may have less agmat nefesh. 
\v 29 Therefore, receive him in Adoneinu with all simcha and hold esteem for such klei kodesh \add (ministers)\add*,\f + \fr 2:29 \fr*\ft \+xt 1C 16:8,16; 1Ti 5:17\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 30 Because he came near to death on account of the avodas kodesh of Moshiach, performing an act of Messianic mesirat nefesh \add (whole-hearted devotion)\add*\f + \fr 2:30 \fr*\ft to the cause of Moshiach, even at risk of life\ft*\f* having risked his life, that he might make up for the ministry to me that you could not give.

\v 3 For we are the Bnei HaMilah,\f + \fr 3:3 \fr*\ft \+xt Ro 2:29; Co 2:11-12\+xt*\ft*\f* the ones whose avodas kodesh is by the Ruach Hakodesh\f + \fr 3:3 \fr*\ft \+xt Yn 4:23; Ro 8:4\+xt*\ft*\f* and whose kavod is in Moshiach Yehoshua and who take no bitachon in the basar, 
\v 4 Even though I could be having bitachon also in the basar. If any other person thinks he has grounds to have bitachon in the basar, I have more:\f + \fr 3:4 \fr*\xt 2C 11:18—12:10\xt*\f* 
\v 5 Bris milah on the eighth day;\f + \fr 3:5 \fr*\ft \+xt Lk 1:59; 2:21\+xt*\ft*\f* from Bnei Yisroel by birth; of the tribe of Binyamin; a speaker of Lashon HaKodesh, Ivrit of Ivrit-speaking horim, a Hebrew of Hebrews;\f + \fr 3:5 \fr*\ft \+xt 2C 11:22\+xt*\ft*\f* with regard to the Torah, from the kat haPerushim;\f + \fr 3:5 \fr*\ft \+xt Ac 23:6; 26:5\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 6 With regard to kin'a \add (zealousness)\add*, persecuting the Adat HaMoshiach;\f + \fr 3:6 \fr*\ft \+xt Ac 8:3; 22:4; 26:9-11\+xt*\ft*\f* with regard to tzidkat HaTorah,\f + \fr 3:6 \fr*\ft \+xt 3:9; Ro 2:27-29\+xt*, as opposed to the tzidkat \+nd Hashem\+nd*\ft*\f* I was medakdekim bmitzvot unreproachable.\f + \fr 3:6 \fr*\ft i.e., hair-splittingly and rigorously observant, glatt kosher, frumkait, shomer mitzvot Haredi\ft*\f* 
\v 7 But what things were revach \add (gain, profit)\add* to me, these things I considered loss, on account of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.\f + \fr 3:7 \fr*\ft \+xt Mt 13:44-46; Lk 14:33\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 8 But even more so, I consider all to be loss on account of the excellency of the da'as of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua Adoneinu,\f + \fr 3:8 \fr*\ft \+xt 3:10; Jer 9:23-24\+xt*\ft*\f* on account of whom I suffered the loss of all things and I consider them as nothing, in comparison, that I may gain Moshiach,\f + \fr 3:8 \fr*\ft \+xt Ps 73:25\+xt*\ft*\f* 
\v 9 And be found in him, not having my own Tzidkot \add (self-achieved righteousness, by definition a self-righteousness based on chumra stringency)\add*\f + \fr 3:9 \fr*\ft zokheh “merit” contra \+xt Dt 9:5-6\+xt*; misinterpretation of the Torah\ft*\f* from gezetz, but the Tzedek\f + \fr 3:9 \fr*\ft \+xt Jer 33:16\+xt*\ft*\f* through emunah\f + \fr 3:9 \fr*\ft \+xt Ro 3:21-22\+xt*\ft*\f* in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, the Tzidkat \nd Hashem\nd* based upon emunah.\f + \fr 3:9 \fr*\ft \+xt Gn 15:6; Ro 9:30\+xt*\ft*\f*
