\q and the pastures of the ro'im \add (shepherds)\add* mourn, \q and the summit of Mt Carmel withers. \b \q \v 3 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Damascus, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they have threshed Gil'ad with threshing sledges of barzel \add (iron)\add*; \q \v 4 But I will send an eish onto Bais Chazael, \q which shall devour the fortresses of Ben-Hadad. \q \v 5 I will break down also the gate bar of Damascus, \q and cut off the inhabitant from Bik'at-Aven, \q and him that holdeth the shevet \add (sceptre)\add* from Bais-Eden; \q and the people of Aram shall go into golus unto Kir, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 6 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Azah \add (Gaza)\add*, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they carried away captive the golus shleimah \add (entire exiled population)\add*, \q to deliver them up to Edom; \q \v 7 But I will send an eish on the chomah \add (wall)\add* of Azah \add (Gaza)\add*, \q which shall devour the fortresses thereof; \q \v 8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, \q and him that holdeth the shevet \add (sceptre)\add* from Ashkelon, \q and I will turn Mine hand against Ekron; \q and the she'erit Pelishtim shall perish, \q saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 9 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Tzor, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they delivered up the golus shleimah to Edom, \q and remembered not the brit achim; \q \v 10 But I will send an eish on the chomah \add (wall)\add* of Tzor, \q which shall devour the fortresses thereof. \b \q \v 11 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Edom, even for arba'ah, \q I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because he did pursue his brother with the cherev, \q and did cast off all rachamim, \q and his anger did rage perpetually, \q and he kept his wrath netzach; \q \v 12 But I will send an eish upon Teman, \q which shall devour the fortresses of Botzrah. \b \q \v 13 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of the Bnei Ammon, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they have ripped open the women with child of Gil'ad, \q that they might enlarge their border; \q \v 14 But I will kindle an eish in the chomah \add (wall)\add* of Rabbah, \q and it shall devour the fortresses thereof, \q with war cries in the yom milchamah, \q with a tempest in the yom sufah \add (day of the storm)\add*; \q \v 15 And their melech shall go into golus, \q he and his sarim \add (princes)\add* together, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \c 2 \q \v 1 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Moav, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because he burned the bones \q of Melech Edom into lime; \q \v 2 But I will send an eish upon Moav, \q and it shall devour the fortresses of Keriyot; \q and Moav shall die with tumult, \q with war cries, and with the blast of the shofar; \q \v 3 And I will cut off the shofet \add (judge)\add* from the midst thereof, \q and will slay all the sarim \add (princes)\add* thereof with him, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 4 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Yehudah, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they have despised the torat \nd Hashem\nd*, \q and have not been shomer over His chukkim, \q and their lies caused them to err, \q after the halakhah of their avot; \q \v 5 But I will send an eish upon Yehudah, \q and it shall devour the fortresses of Yerushalayim. \b \q \v 6 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q For shloshah peysha'im of Yisroel, \q even for arba'ah, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; \q because they sold the tzaddik for kesef, \q and the needy for a pair of sandals; \q \v 7 They who trample on the dust of the ground which is on the rosh of the poor, \q and turn aside the derech of the anavim; \q and an ish and his av will go in unto the same na'arah, \q to commit chillul \nd Hashem\nd* against My Shem kodesh; \q \v 8 And they lay themselves down \q upon clothes taken in pledge by every mizbe'ach, \q and they guzzle the yayin \q of the fined in the Beis Eloheichem. \b \q \v 9 Yet destroyed I HaEmori before them, \q whose height was like the height of the cedars, \q and he was strong as the oaks; \q yet I destroyed his p'ri from above, \q and his shorashim from beneath. \q \v 10 Also I brought you up from Eretz Mitzrayim, \q and led you arba'im shanah through the midbar, \q to possess the Eretz HaEmori \add (land of the Amorite)\add*. \q \v 11 And I raised up of your banim for nevi'im, \q and of your bochurim for Nezirim. \q Is it not even thus, O ye Bnei Yisroel? \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 12 But ye gave the Nezirim yayin to drink; \q and commanded the nevi'im, saying: \q Prophesy not. \b \q \v 13 Hinei, I am weighed down by you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves. \q \v 14 Therefore flight shall perish from the swift, \q and the chazak shall not strengthen his ko'ach, \q neither shall the gibbor deliver his own nefesh; \q \v 15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the keshet; \q and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver his own nefesh; \q neither shall he that rideth the sus deliver himself. \q \v 16 And he that is courageous among the gibborim \q shall flee away naked in that Yom, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \c 3 \p \v 1 Hear this word that \nd Hashem\nd* hath spoken against you, O Bnei Yisroel, against the kol hamishpochoh which I brought up from Eretz Mitzrayim, saying: \b \q \v 2 You only have I known of all the mishpechot ha'adamah: \q therefore I will punish you for kol avonotechem. \b \q \v 3 Can shnayim walk together, \q except they be agreed? \q \v 4 Will an aryeh roar in the thicket, \q when he hath no prey? \q Will a lion roar from his den, \q if he has taken nothing? \q \v 5 Can a bird fall in a pach ha'aretz \add (trap on the ground)\add*, \q when his snare is not set? \q Can a pach spring up from ha'aretz \q without making a capture? \q \v 6 Shall a shofar be blown in the city, \q and the people not be afraid? \q Shall there be disaster in a city, \q and \nd Hashem\nd* hath not caused it? \b \q \v 7 Surely Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* will do nothing, \q but He revealeth His sod \add (secret)\add* \q unto His avadim hanevi'im. \q \v 8 The aryeh hath roared, \q who will not fear? \q Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* hath spoken, \q who can but prophesy? \b \q \v 9 Publish in the fortresses at Ashdod, \q and in the fortresses in Eretz Mitzrayim, \q and say: Assemble yourselves upon harei Shomron, \q and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, \q and the oppression in the midst thereof. \q \v 10 For they have no da'as to do right, saith \nd Hashem\nd*, \q who store up chamas and shod in their fortresses. \b \q \v 11 Therefore thus saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*: \q An adversary shall surround the land; \q and he shall bring down thy strongholds from thee, \q and thy fortresses shall be plundered. \b \p \v 12 Thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: As the ro'eh taketh out of the mouth of the aryeh two legs, or a piece of an ozen; so shall the Bnei Yisroel be saved that dwell in Shomron — with the corner of a mittah \add (bed)\add*, and the edge of a couch. \b \q \v 13 Hear ye, and testify against Bais Ya'akov, \q saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*, Elohei HaTzva'os, \q \v 14 On the Yom that I visit her \q to punish the peysha'im of Yisroel, \q I will also visit to punish the mizbechot of Beit-El; \q and the horns of the mizbe'ach shall be cut off, \q and fall to ha'aretz. \q \v 15 And I will strike the bais hachoref with the bais hakayitz; \q and the batim \add (houses)\add* of ivory shall perish, \q and the batim rabbim \add (great houses)\add* shall have an end, \q saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \c 4 \q \v 1 Hear this word, ye cows of Bashan, \q that are on Mt Shomron, which oppress the poor, \q which crush the needy, which say to their adonim: \q Bring, and let us drink. \q \v 2 Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* hath sworn by His Kodesh that, \q hinei, the yamim shall come upon you, \q that He will take you away with hooks, \q and the last of you with fishhooks. \q \v 3 And ye shall go out of the breaks in the wall, \q every cow right behind the next; \q and ye shall be cast out toward Harmon, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 4 Come to Beit-El, and transgress; \q at Gilgal multiply peysha'im; \q and bring your zevakhim every boker, and your ma'asrot \add (tithes)\add* every third day; \q \v 5 And offer a todah thank offering with chametz \add (leavened bread)\add*, \q and proclaim and publish the nedavot \add (freewill offerings)\add*; \q for this ye love, O Bnei Yisroel, \qr saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 6 And I also have given you \q cleanness of teeth\f + \fr 4:6 \fr*\ft i.e., famine\ft*\f* in all your towns, \q and want of lechem in all your places; \q yet have ye not returned unto Me, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 7 And also I have withheld the geshem from you, \q when there were yet shloshah chodashim to the harvest; \q and I caused it to rain upon one town, \q and caused it not to rain upon another town; \q one chelek \add (part)\add* was rained upon, \q and the chelek, whereupon it rained not, withered. \q \v 8 So two or three towns wandered unto one town, \q to drink mayim, but they were not satisfied; \q yet have ye not returned unto Me, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 9 I have struck you with blight and mildew; \q when your ganim \add (gardens)\add* and your kramim \add (vineyards)\add* \q and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, \q the locust devoured them; \q yet have ye not returned unto Me, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 10 I have sent among you the dever after the manner of Mitzrayim; \q your bocherim have I slain with the cherev, \q and have taken away your susim; \q and I have made the stench \q of your machanot to come up unto your nostrils; \q yet have ye not returned unto Me, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 11 I have overthrown some of you, \q as Elohim overthrew Sodom and Amora \add (Gomorrah)\add*, \q and ye were like a firebrand snatched from the burning; \q yet have ye not returned unto Me, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Yisroel; \q and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet Eloheicha, O Yisroel. \q \v 13 For, hinei, He that formeth the harim, and createth the ruach, \q and declareth unto man what is his thought, \q that maketh the shachar darkness, \q and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, \q \nd Hashem\nd* Elohei Tzva'os Shmo. \c 5 \p \v 1 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a kinah \add (lamentation)\add*, O Bais Yisroel. \b \q \v 2 The Betulat Yisroel is fallen; \q she shall no more rise; \q she is forsaken in her own land; \q there is none to raise her up. \b \q \v 3 For thus saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*: \q The city that went out by a thousand \q will be left a hundred, \q and that which went forth by an hundred \q will be left ten, for Bais Yisroel. \b \q \v 4 For thus saith \nd Hashem\nd* unto Bais Yisroel: \q Seek ye Me, and live; \q \v 5 But seek not Beit-El, \q nor enter into Gilgal, \q and pass not to Be'er-Sheva; \q for Gilgal shall surely go into golus, \q and Beit-El shall come to naught. \b \q \v 6 Seek \nd Hashem\nd*, and live; \q lest He break out like eish in Bais Yosef, \q and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beit-El. \q \v 7 Ye who turn mishpat into wormwood, \q and cast tzedakah to the ground. \b \q \v 8 Seek Him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, \q and turneth tzalmavet into boker, \q and maketh the yom into lailah; \q that calleth for the waters of the yam, \q and poureth them out upon the face of ha'aretz; \q \nd Hashem\nd* Shmo; \q \v 9 Who causeth shod \add (destruction)\add* to flash upon the strong, \q and shod upon the fortified city. \b \q \v 10 They hate the mochiach \add (reprover)\add* [of injustice] in the gate, \q and they abhor him that speaketh tamim \add (uprightly)\add*. \q \v 11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, \q and ye take from him burdens of wheat; \q ye have built batim \add (houses)\add* of hewn stone, \q but ye shall not dwell in them; \q ye have planted pleasant kramim \add (vineyards)\add*, \q but ye shall not drink yayin of them. \q \v 12 For I have da'as of your manifold peysha'im \q and your mighty chattaim \add (sins)\add*; \q they afflict the tzaddik, they take a bribe, \q and they turn aside the poor in the sha'ar \add (gate, court)\add* from their right. \q \v 13 Therefore the maskil \add (prudent)\add* shall keep silence in such times; \q for it is an evil time. \b \q \v 14 Seek tov, and not rah, \q that ye may live; \q and so \nd Hashem\nd* Elohei Tzva'os shall be with you, \q just as ye say He is. \q \v 15 Hate the rah, and love the tov, \q and establish mishpat in the sha'ar; \q it may be that \nd Hashem\nd* Elohei Tzava'os \q will be gracious unto the she'erit Yosef. \b \m \v 16 Therefore \nd Hashem\nd* Adonoi Elohei Tzva'os saith thus: \b \q Wailing shall be in all rechovot; \q and they shall cry in all the public squares, \q Alas! Alas! And they shall call the ikkar \add (farmer)\add* to mourning, \q and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing. \q \v 17 And in all kramim \add (vineyards)\add* shall be wailing; \q for I will pass through thee, saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 18 Hoy unto you that desire the Yom \nd Hashem\nd*! \q Why do ye seek it? \q The Yom \nd Hashem\nd* is choshech, and not ohr. \q \v 19 As if a man did flee from an ari, \q and a dov met him; \q or went into the bais, \q and leaned his hand on the kir \add (wall)\add*, \q and a nachash bit him. \q \v 20 Shall not the Yom \nd Hashem\nd* be choshech, and not ohr? \q Even very dark, and no brightness in it? \b \q \v 21 I hate, I despise your chagim \add (religious festivals)\add*, \q and I do not savor your atzerot \add (solemn assemblies)\add*. \q \v 22 Though ye offer Me olot \q and your minchot, I will not accept them; \q neither will I regard your choice shelamim \add (peace offerings)\add*. \q \v 23 Take thou away from Me the noise of thy shirim \add (songs)\add*; \q for I will not hear the melody of thy nevalim \add (harps)\add*. \q \v 24 But let mishpat run down as mayim, \q and tzedakah as a never failing stream. \b \p \v 25 Did ye offer unto Me zevakhim and minchah in the midbar arba'im shanah, O Bais Yisroel? \v 26 But ye have borne Sikkut your king and Kiyun your tzelamim, your star g-d, which ye made for yourselves. \v 27 Therefore will I cause you to go into golus beyond Damascus, saith \nd Hashem\nd*, Elohei Tzva'os Shmo. \c 6 \q \v 1 Hoy to them that are complacent in Tziyon, \q and have their bitachon in Har Shomron, \q the notables of the foremost Goyim, \q to whom Bais Yisroel comes! \q \v 2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; \q and from thence go ye to great Chamat; \q then go down to Gat of the Pelishtim \add (Philistines)\add*; \q be they better than these mamlachot? \q Or their territory more vast than your territory? \q \v 3 Ye that put far away the Yom Rah, \q and cause the shevet chamas to come near; \q \v 4 That lie upon beds of ivory, \q and stretch themselves upon their couches, \q and eat the lambs out of the tzon, \q and the calves from the stall; \q \v 5 Who prattle to the tune of the nevel \add (harp)\add*; \q like Dovid\f + \fr 6:5 \fr*\ft HaMelech\ft*\f* they invent string instruments. \q \v 6 That drink yayin in sacrificial bowls, \q and anoint themselves with the finest ointments; \q but they are not grieved for the shever Yosef \add (ruin of Yosef)\add*. \q \v 7 Therefore now shall they go \q into captivity at the head of the golus, \q and the merry shouting of the revellers will die. \b \m \v 8 Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* hath sworn by Himself, saith \nd Hashem\nd* Elohei Tzva'os: \b \q I abhor the ga'on Ya'akov, \q and hate his fortresses; \q therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein. \b \p \v 9 And it shall come to pass, if there remain asarah anashim in one bais, they shall die. \v 10 And a manʼs relative shall take him up, and he that burieth him, to carry out the bones out of the bais, and shall say unto him still hiding inside, Is there yet any with thee? And he shall say, Not one. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue; for the Shem \nd Hashem\nd* is not to be invoked. \b \q \v 11 For, hinei, \nd Hashem\nd* commandeth, \q and He will strike the bais hagadol into ruins, \q and the bais hakaton into pieces. \q \v 12 Do susim run upon the rock? \q Do men plow there with oxen? \q For ye have turned mishpat into poison, \q and the p'ri of tzedakah into wormwood; \q \v 13 Ye which rejoice over what is worthless, \q which say: Have we not taken to us \q horns\f + \fr 6:13 \fr*\ft i.e., symbols of military resources\ft*\f* by chazekeinu \add (our own strength)\add*? \q \v 14 But, hineni, I will raise up against you a Goy \add (Nation)\add*, \q O Bais Yisroel, saith \nd Hashem\nd* Elohei Tzva'os; \q and they shall afflict you from the territory of Chamat \q unto the Wadi of the Aravah.\f + \fr 6:14 \fr*\ft Notice in the next chapter that Amos refuses to be intimidated by an apostate religious leader who dares to war against Scripture. Amos gives a prophetic prediction that this chalatan will be defrocked by \+nd Hashem\+nd* by being dragged off to an unclean heathen land.\ft*\f* \c 7 \p \v 1 Thus hath Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* showed unto me; and, hinei, He formed locusts in the beginning of the springing up of the second crop; and, hinei, it was the second crop after the mowing of the melech. \v 2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the vegetation of ha'aretz, then I said: \b \q O Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*, forgive, I beseech thee; \q how shall Ya'akov survive? For he is katon. \q \v 3 \nd Hashem\nd* relented for this: \q It shall not be, saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \p \v 4 Thus hath Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* showed unto me; and, hinei, Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* called to punish with eish, and it devoured the tehom rabbah \add (great deep)\add*, and did devour the chelek \add (portion)\add*. \v 5 Then said I: \b \q O Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*, cease, I beseech thee; \q how shall Ya'akov survive? For he is katon. \q \v 6 \nd Hashem\nd* relented for this: \q This also shall not be, saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \p \v 7 Thus He showed me; and, hinei, \nd Hashem\nd* stood upon a chomah \add (wall)\add* made with a plumb line, and a plumb line in His hand. \v 8 And \nd Hashem\nd* said unto me: Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumb line. Then said \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q Hineni, I will set a plumb line \q in the midst of My people Yisroel; \q I will not again pass by them\f + \fr 7:8 \fr*\ft and spare them\ft*\f* anymore; \q \v 9 And the high places of Yischak shall be desolate, \q and the mikdeshei Yisroel\f + \fr 7:9 \fr*\ft i.e., heathen sanctuaries\ft*\f* shall be laid waste; \q and I will rise against the Bais Yarov'am with the cherev. \b \p \v 10 Then Amatzyah the kohen of Beit-El sent to Yarov'am Melech Yisroel, saying: Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of Bais Yisroel; the land is not able to bear all his words. \v 11 For thus Amos saith: \b \q Yarov'am shall die by the cherev, \q and Yisroel shall surely be led away \q into the golus out of their own land. \b \p \v 12 Also Amatzyah said unto Amos: O thou seer, go, flee thee away into Eretz Yehudah, and there eat lechem, and prophesy there, \v 13 But prophesy not again any more at Beit-El; for it is the Mikdash Melech, and it is the Bais Mamlachah. \p \v 14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amatzyah: I was no navi, neither was I a ben navi; but I was a herder, and a dresser of sycamore-fig trees; \v 15 And \nd Hashem\nd* took me as I followed the tzon, and \nd Hashem\nd* said unto me: Go, prophesy unto My people Yisroel. \v 16 Now therefore hear thou the Devar \nd Hashem\nd*: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Yisroel, and drop not thy word against the Bais Yischak. \p \v 17 Therefore thus saith \nd Hashem\nd*: \b \q Thy isha shall be a zonah in the city, \q and thy banim and thy banot shall fall by the cherev, \q and thy land shall be divided by line; \q and thou shalt die in an adamah temei'ah \add (unclean land)\add*; \q and Yisroel shall surely go forth of his land into golus \add (exile)\add*. \c 8 \p \v 1 Thus hath Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* showed unto me: and hinei a basket of kayitz \add (summer fruit)\add*. \v 2 And \nd Hashem\nd* said: Amos, what seest thou? And I said: A basket of kayitz \add (summer fruit)\add*. Then said \nd Hashem\nd* unto me: \b \q The ketz \add (end)\add* is come upon My people Yisroel; \q I will not again pass by them [and spare them] anymore. \q \v 3 And the shirot of the heikhal shall turn to wailings in that Yom, \qr saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*; \q there shall be many dead bodies in every place; \q they shall cast them forth. \q Silence! \b \q \v 4 Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, \q even to make the anivvei aretz \add (poor of the land)\add* to fail, \q \v 5 Saying, When will the Rosh Chodesh be over, \q that we may sell grain? \q And Shabbos, that we may market wheat, \q making the eifah \add (bushel)\add* small, and the shekel great, \q and falsifying the balances by mirmah \add (deceit)\add*? \q \v 6 That we may buy the poor for kesef, \q and the needy for a pair of sandals; \q yea, and sell the sweepings with the wheat? \b \q \v 7 \nd Hashem\nd* hath sworn by the ga'on Ya'akov, \q Surely I will never forget any of their ma'asim. \q \v 8 Shall not ha'aretz \add (the land)\add* tremble for this, \q and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? \q And the whole land shall rise like the Nile; \q and heave and sink, \q as by the Nile of Mitzrayim. \b \q \v 9 And it shall come to pass in that Yom, \q saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*, \q that I will cause the shemesh to go down at noon, \q and I will darken ha'aretz in the yom ohr \add (day light)\add*; \q \v 10 And I will turn your chagim into mourning, \q and all your shirot into lamentation; \q and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, \q and baldness upon every rosh; \q and I will make it as the mourning of a yachid \add (only son)\add*, \q and the end thereof as a yom mar \add (bitter day)\add*. \b \q \v 11 Hinei, the yamim come, saith Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd*, \q that I will send a ra'av \add (famine)\add* in the land, \q not a ra'av \add (famine)\add* of lechem, nor a thirst for mayim, \q but of hearing the Divrei \nd Hashem\nd*; \q \v 12 And they shall wander from yam to yam, \q and from the tzafon \add (north)\add* even to the mizrach \add (east)\add*, \q they shall run to and fro to seek the Devar \nd Hashem\nd*, \q and shall not find it. \b \q \v 13 In that Yom shall the betulot hayafot \add (fair virgins)\add* \q and bochurim faint for thirst. \q \v 14 They that swear by the sin of Shomron, \q and say: Chai Eloheicha, O Dan; \q and: The Derech Be'er-Sheva liveth; \q even they shall fall, and never rise up again. \c 9 \p \v 1 I saw Adonoi standing by the mizbe'ach; and He said: \b \q Strike the pillar capitals,\f + \fr 9:1 \fr*\ft of the heathen shrine\ft*\f* that the thresholds may shake; \q and smash them upon the heads of all; \q and I will slay the last of them with the cherev; \q he that fleeth of them shall not get away, \q and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered. \b \q \v 2 Though they dig down to Sheol, \q thence shall Mine hand take them; \q though they climb up to Shomayim, \q thence will I bring them down; \q \v 3 And though they hide themselves in the summit of Carmel, \q I will search and take them out thence; \q and though they be hid \q from My sight in the bottom of the yam, \q thence will I command the nachash, \q and he shall bite them; \q \v 4 And though they go into golus \add (exile)\add* before their enemies, \q thence will I command the cherev, and it shall slay them; \q and I will set Mine eyes upon them \q for rah, and not for tov. \b \q \v 5 And Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* HaTzva'os \q is He that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, \q and all that dwell therein shall mourn; \q and it shall rise up wholly like the Nile; \q and sink like the Nile of Mitzrayim. \q \v 6 It is He that buildeth his ma'alot \add (stairs)\add* in Shomayim, \q and hath founded His aguddah \add (fitted together vault)\add* over Eretz; \q He that calleth for the waters of the yam, \q and poureth them out upon the face of ha'aretz; \q \nd Hashem\nd* Shmo. \b \q \v 7 Are ye not as children of Ethiopia unto Me, \q O Bnai Yisroel? saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \q Have not I brought up Yisroel out of Eretz Mitzrayim? \q And the Pelishtim \add (Philistines)\add* from Caphtor, \q and Aram from Kir? \q \v 8 Hinei, the eyes of Adonoi \nd Hashem\nd* \q are upon the mamlachah hachatta'ah, \q and I will destroy it from off the face of ha'aretz; \q nevertheless I will not utterly destroy Bais Ya'akov, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*. \b \q \v 9 For, hinei, I will command, and I will sift \q Bais Yisroel among all Goyim, \q like as grain is sifted in a sieve, \q yet shall not the least grain fall upon ha'aretz. \q \v 10 All the chatta'ei ami \add (sinners of My people)\add* shall die by the cherev, \q which say: The ra'ah shall not overtake nor come to us. \b \q \v 11 In that Yom will I raise up \q the Sukkat Dovid that is fallen, \q and close up the breaches thereof; \q and I will raise up his ruins, \q and I will build it as in the yamei olam; \q \v 12 that they may possess the she'erit Edom and all the Goyim, \q which are called by Shmi, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd*, that doeth this. \b \q \v 13 Hinei, the yamim are coming, saith \nd Hashem\nd*, \q that the plowman shall overtake the kotzer \add (reaper)\add*, \q and the treader of grapes him that soweth zera; \q and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, \q and all the hills shall flow with it. \q \v 14 And I will bring back the captives of My people Yisroel, \q and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; \q and they shall plant kramim \add (vineyards)\add*, and drink the yayin thereof; \q they shall also make gannot, and eat the p'ri of them. \q \v 15 And I will plant them upon their land, \q and they shall no more be torn up \q out of their land which I have given them, \qr saith \nd Hashem\nd* Eloheicha.
