In his first letter Peter ended the salutation here, but now he fleshes out the means.\f* \w through|strong="G1722"\w* \w a|strong="G2532"\w* \w real|strong="G1922"\w* \w knowledge|strong="G1922"\w* \w of|strong="G2316"\w* \w God|strong="G2316"\w*\f + \fr 1:2 \ft As our genuine knowledge of God grows, so the amount or degree of grace and peace we receive also grows.\f* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w of|strong="G2316"\w* \w our|strong="G2316"\w* \w Lord|strong="G2962"\w* \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w*,\f + \fr 1:2 \ft Here the reference is to two persons, Father and Son—although the grammar could be taken to indicate a single person, in which case I would render ‘of God, even our Lord Jesus’ (or ‘Jesus our Lord’). But looking at the next verse, “His divine power” refers to the Father, because “the One who called” refers to the Son.\f* \v 3 \w in|strong="G2532"\w* \w that|strong="G3588"\w* \w His|strong="G3956"\w* \w divine|strong="G2304"\w* \w power|strong="G1411"\w* \w has|strong="G2532"\w* \w granted|strong="G1433"\w* \w to|strong="G4314"\w* \w us|strong="G2249"\w* \w all|strong="G3956"\w* \w things|strong="G3956"\w* \it pertaining\it* \w to|strong="G4314"\w* \w life|strong="G2222"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w godliness|strong="G2150"\w*, \w through|strong="G1223"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w real|strong="G1922"\w* \w knowledge|strong="G1922"\w* \w of|strong="G1223"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w One|strong="G3956"\w*\f + \fr 1:3 \ft Again, we only appropriate the complete provision for “life and godliness” to the degree that we grow in our genuine knowledge of God. As Creator He made everything upon which life depends, including life itself, but our understanding of and appreciation for His provision is measured by our relationship with Him.\f* \w who|strong="G3588"\w* \w called|strong="G2564"\w* \w us|strong="G2249"\w* \w by|strong="G1223"\w* \w glory|strong="G1391"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* excellence,\f + \fr 1:3 \ft I take it that Peter is saying that it is the glory and moral excellence of Christ that attracts us, but there is the extraordinary promise that we can share in those qualities, as he spells out in verse 4. Instead of “by glory”, perhaps 19% of the Greek manuscripts have ‘by His own glory’ (as in NIV, NASB, LB, TEV, etc.).\f* \v 4 \w through|strong="G1223"\w* \w which|strong="G3739"\w*\f + \fr 1:4 \ft “Which” is plural and presumably refers back to “glory and excellence”.\f* \w He|strong="G2532"\w* \w has|strong="G3739"\w* \w granted|strong="G1433"\w* \w to|strong="G2443"\w* \w us|strong="G2249"\w* \w such|strong="G3778"\w* \w precious|strong="G5093"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* extraordinary \w promises|strong="G1862"\w*, \w so|strong="G2443"\w* \w that|strong="G2443"\w* \w through|strong="G1223"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w*\f + \fr 1:4 \ft The promises—but of course we have to appropriate them.\f* \w you|strong="G3739"\w* \w may|strong="G2532"\w* \w become|strong="G1096"\w* \w partakers|strong="G2844"\w* \w of|strong="G1223"\w* \w a|strong="G1096"\w* \w divine|strong="G2304"\w* \w nature|strong="G5449"\w*,\f + \fr 1:4 \ft There is no definite article with “divine nature”; “become” indicates a process—the more like Christ we become, the more divine will our nature be.\f* \w having|strong="G2532"\w* escaped \w the|strong="G1722"\w* depravity \w that|strong="G2443"\w* \w is|strong="G3588"\w* \w in|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w world|strong="G2889"\w* \w because|strong="G1223"\w* \w of|strong="G1223"\w* \w lust|strong="G1939"\w*.\f + \fr 1:4 \ft At times Peter's syntax seems to be almost as convoluted as Paul's; the first four verses form a single sentence. The precise interrelationship of the dependent clauses is not transparent. The notes above give my understanding of Peter's intent. It is the inordinate desire (lust) for anything in this world that leads to depravity. The proper amount of food, drink, pleasure, money, power or whatever is a good thing. It is when people want more that they get into trouble.\f* \ms1 Take the Truth seriously! \s1 Our ‘entrance’ depends on us \p \v 5 \w So|strong="G2532"\w* \w for|strong="G1161"\w* \w this|strong="G3778"\w* \w very|strong="G2532"\w* reason, \w making|strong="G2532"\w* \w every|strong="G3956"\w* \w effort|strong="G4710"\w*,\f + \fr 1:5 \ft Here Peter emphasizes human responsibility, heavily.\f* \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w your|strong="G2532"\w* \w faith|strong="G4102"\w* \w add|strong="G2023"\w* excellence,\f + \fr 1:5 \ft The word used here can refer to excellence in any area, but in this context the emphasis is presumably on moral excellence.\f* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* excellence \w knowledge|strong="G1108"\w*, \v 6 \w and|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w knowledge|strong="G1108"\w* \w self-control|strong="G1466"\w*, \w and|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w self-control|strong="G1466"\w* \w perseverance|strong="G5281"\w*, \w and|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w perseverance|strong="G5281"\w* \w godliness|strong="G2150"\w*, \v 7 \w and|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w godliness|strong="G2150"\w* \w brotherly|strong="G5360"\w* affection, \w and|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w brotherly|strong="G5360"\w* affection \w love|strong="G5360"\w*.\f + \fr 1:7 \ft Do these qualities have to be added in this sequence, or can we tackle them in any order, or even all at once? If this sequence must be followed I do not understand how it works. I believe spiritual growth moves in an upward spiral; the Holy Spirit makes the rounds of all areas, progressively increasing the level of excellence, or Christ-likeness. I take this to be the point of the “increasing” in verse 8.\f* \v 8 \w Because|strong="G1063"\w* \w with|strong="G2532"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w* \w things|strong="G3778"\w* existing \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w increasing|strong="G4121"\w* \w in|strong="G1519"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w*, \w it|strong="G2532"\w* \w makes|strong="G2525"\w* \it you to be\it* \w neither|strong="G3761"\w* useless \w nor|strong="G3761"\w* unfruitful \w in|strong="G1519"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w real|strong="G1922"\w* \w knowledge|strong="G1922"\w*\f + \fr 1:8 \ft I have used “real knowledge” repeatedly because I take that to be the intent of the Text. Real knowledge of God contrasts with human ideas about God and false ‘knowledge’ furnished by demonic prophecies, visions, etc. It also contrasts with \+nd true\+nd* theoretical knowledge about God—\+nd real\+nd* knowledge must be experiential, as well as being true. Notice that we are supposed to be useful, to be fruitful. If we do not grow, something is definitely wrong, as verse 9 makes clear.\f* \w of|strong="G2532"\w* \w our|strong="G2424"\w* \w Lord|strong="G2962"\w* \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w*. \v 9 \w For|strong="G1063"\w* \w he|strong="G3739"\w* \w who|strong="G3739"\w* \w lacks|strong="G3361"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w* \w things|strong="G3778"\w* \w is|strong="G1510"\w* \w blind|strong="G5185"\w*, \w being|strong="G1510"\w* \it so\it* myopic, \w having|strong="G3361"\w* \w forgotten|strong="G2983"\w* \w the|strong="G3588"\w* \w cleansing|strong="G2512"\w* \w from|strong="G3588"\w* \w his|strong="G2983"\w* \w past|strong="G3819"\w* sins.\f + \fr 1:9 \ft Peter says that someone who lacks the qualities listed in verses 5-7 has forgotten his cleansing and become myopic to the point of being practically blind. If we do not walk with God, do not study His Word, do not listen to the Holy Spirit, Satan will cheerfully take care of the rest.\f* \p \v 10 \w Therefore|strong="G1352"\w*, brothers, \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w should|strong="G3588"\w* \w be|strong="G2532"\w* \w all|strong="G2532"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w more|strong="G3123"\w* \w diligent|strong="G4704"\w* \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w make|strong="G4160"\w* \w your|strong="G2532"\w* \w calling|strong="G2821"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w election|strong="G1589"\w* sure,\f + \fr 1:10 \ft As in his first letter, Peter emphasizes both divine sovereignty and human responsibility, only this verse is especially bothersome to certain theological systems. If we can make our election sure, then we can also make it unsure, or words have no meaning. Since both truths are clearly presented from cover to cover of the Bible, theological systems that emphasize only one of the two do not do justice to the Sacred Text. To emphasize only one is to hop on one foot—to walk, run and work efficiently you really need both feet. To our limited human logic the two truths appear to be incompatible, but to God's infinite logic they obviously are not. Those who are wise will bow to God's logic.\f* \w for|strong="G1063"\w* \w if|strong="G2532"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w do|strong="G4160"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w* \w things|strong="G3778"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w will|strong="G2532"\w* \w never|strong="G3756"\w* \w stumble|strong="G4417"\w*.\f + \fr 1:10 \ft The verb used is ‘to stumble’, not ‘to fall’, but the tense used suggests a permanent consequence.\f* \v 11 \w Because|strong="G1063"\w* \w in|strong="G1519"\w* \w this|strong="G3588"\w* \w way|strong="G3779"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w will|strong="G2532"\w* \w be|strong="G2532"\w* granted \w the|strong="G2532"\w* abundant \w entrance|strong="G1529"\w*\f + \fr 1:11 \ft The Text has the definite article; I take the point to be that there will be different levels or kinds of “entrance”; some will have many rewards, others some, others none (1 Corinthians 3:15). Those who follow the orientation in these verses will receive many rewards, they will get “the abundant entrance”. (I suppose we will all agree that it is better to get in by the skin of your teeth [1 Corinthians 3:15] than not to get in at all, but would it not be better yet to have some rewards? The amount is up to us.)\f* \w into|strong="G1519"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* unending kingdom \w of|strong="G2532"\w* \w our|strong="G2424"\w* \w Lord|strong="G2962"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w Savior|strong="G4990"\w*, \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w*.\f + \fr 1:11 \ft To participate in that “unending Kingdom” is surely worth whatever effort is required of us. The difficulty is that all such effort must be expended in faith.\f* \s1 Peter's death is imminent \p \v 12 \w So|strong="G2532"\w* \w then|strong="G2532"\w*, \w I|strong="G2532"\w* \w will|strong="G3195"\w* \w not|strong="G2532"\w* neglect \w to|strong="G2532"\w* keep reminding \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w about|strong="G4012"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w* \w things|strong="G3778"\w*, \w though|strong="G2532"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w know|strong="G1492"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w are|strong="G3588"\w* \w established|strong="G4741"\w* \w in|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w present|strong="G3918"\w* truth. \v 13 \w Yes|strong="G1161"\w*, \w I|strong="G1161"\w* \w think|strong="G2233"\w* \w it|strong="G1161"\w* \w right|strong="G1342"\w* \w to|strong="G1909"\w* \w stir|strong="G1326"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w up|strong="G1326"\w* \w by|strong="G1722"\w* \w a|strong="G1722"\w* \w reminder|strong="G5280"\w*, \w as|strong="G3745"\w* \w long|strong="G3745"\w* \w as|strong="G3745"\w* \w I|strong="G1161"\w* \w am|strong="G1510"\w* \w in|strong="G1722"\w* \w this|strong="G3778"\w* ‘tent’, \v 14 \w knowing|strong="G1492"\w* \w that|strong="G3754"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* shedding \w of|strong="G2532"\w* \w my|strong="G3708"\w* ‘tent’ \w is|strong="G1510"\w* \w imminent|strong="G5031"\w*, \w just|strong="G2531"\w* \w as|strong="G2531"\w* \w our|strong="G2424"\w* \w Lord|strong="G2962"\w* \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w* \w has|strong="G2962"\w* \w made|strong="G1213"\w* \w clear|strong="G1213"\w* \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w me|strong="G1473"\w*.\f + \fr 1:14 \ft The Lord told Peter his time was up, and evidently did the same for Paul (2 Timothy 4:6). “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). A servant of God dies only at the appointed time.\f* \v 15 \w Moreover|strong="G1161"\w* \w I|strong="G2532"\w* \w will|strong="G2532"\w* \w take|strong="G2192"\w* pains \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w provide|strong="G4160"\w* \w a|strong="G2192"\w* reminder \w of|strong="G2532"\w* \w these|strong="G3778"\w* \w things|strong="G3778"\w* \w for|strong="G1161"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w to|strong="G2532"\w* \w have|strong="G2192"\w*,\f + \fr 1:15 \ft Verses 12 & 13 refer to repeated reminders while he is still in his ‘tent’, which would be his own ongoing activity; so why the ‘moreover’ in verse 15? In the NKJV verse 15 reads: “Moreover, I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease”. Well, how can you ‘ensure’ that someone will ‘always have a reminder’ of something? It seems clear to me that the something has to be written down; a reminder has to be in writing, to be guaranteed. So what is Peter's intention? He specifies “a reminder of these things”, so what are the ‘these things’? They are evidently the things he will discuss in this letter. But he must be referring to something more than the initial draft of the letter (or the verse becomes meaningless)—hence, multiple copies. But the new day happens in our hearts; eternal life is a quality of life that we can start enjoying right now, in this world. However, Peter's use of “until” points to the future Glorious Day.\f* \v 20 \w knowing|strong="G1097"\w* \w this|strong="G3778"\w* \w first|strong="G4413"\w*, \w that|strong="G3754"\w* \w no|strong="G3756"\w* \w Prophecy|strong="G4394"\w* \w of|strong="G3956"\w* \w Scripture|strong="G1124"\w* \w comes|strong="G1096"\w* \w to|strong="G3756"\w* \w be|strong="G1096"\w* \w from|strong="G3756"\w* \w private|strong="G2398"\w* release;\f + \fr 1:20 \ft The word rendered “release” occurs only here in the New Testament, but the basic meaning of the root is ‘to loose’ or ‘release’. With reference to a prophetic word it could refer either to its enunciation/origination or to its interpretation. Verse 21 makes clear that here it is the origination. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Of course we have two eyes, but the Text has ‘eye’ in the singular. I take it that the reference is to the way we interpret what we see (which is our real ‘eye’)—two people, one pure and one vile, observing the same scene will give very different interpretations to it. ‘Evil’ here has the idea of malignant, aggressively evil. Someone with a malignant mind will give an evil interpretation to \+nd everything\+nd* he sees, and in consequence his being will be filled with unrelenting darkness. Peter is saying that they will share Satan's destiny. The description given to these false teachers is unusually severe, Peter really does not like them! Since God hates those who have sold themselves to do evil (Psalm 5:5-6, Deuteronomy 7:10), so does Peter, and so must we. (Psalm 97:10 has a \+nd command\+nd*: “You who love Jehovah, hate evil!” David, at least, obeyed it—Psalm 26:5, 31:6, 119:113, 139:21-22. How about us?) God's love includes hating evil, of necessity, because of the consequences of the evil. If it would have been \+bd better\+bd* for them not to have known, then of necessity they are now worse off than they were before they knew (as verse 20 makes clear). But before they knew they were lost, so what can be worse than that? To be lost without a chance. Before, they were lost but had the option to be saved. But once they know the Truth, if they throw it away there is no second chance. Hebrews 6:4-6 is plain enough (if you hear someone twist the Text into a pretzel in an effort to avoid the plain meaning, you may be sure that whatever position he is trying to defend is incorrect). “For it is impossible for those who were once for all [\+it hapax\+it*] enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become sharers in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the coming age, and have fallen away—\+it it is impossible\+it* to renew them again to repentance, thereby crucifying the Son of God \+bd again\+bd*, \+it just\+it* for themselves, holding Him up to contempt.” You cannot crucify \+nd again\+nd* unless you have crucified at least once already. For someone to crucify Jesus \+nd again\+nd* must mean that he has indeed taken advantage of the first crucifixion, he was indeed saved—if he was never really saved he never really appropriated the first crucifixion, so he cannot do it \+bd again\+bd*. \fp I have used ‘to really know’ to translate the heightened form επιγινωσκω (in contrast to γινωσκω, ‘to know’) and ‘real knowledge’ to translate the heightened form επιγνωσις (in contrast to γνωσις, ‘knowledge’). I consider that the Holy Spirit is an intelligent and honest user of human language, so His choice of the heightened forms was deliberate. Those who seek to arrive at the intended meaning of the Text need to respect that deliberate choice.
