To hear “Well done, good and faithful servant” from the lips of the Sovereign will be the ultimate praise.\f* \w at|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* revelation \w of|strong="G1223"\w* \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w* \v 8 —\w whom|strong="G3739"\w* \w not|strong="G3756"\w* \w having|strong="G2532"\w* understood\f + \fr 1:8 \ft The familiar ‘seen’ is based on about 7% of the Greek manuscripts (early, but of objectively inferior quality); to render ‘known’ rather than “understood” would require qualification.\f* \w you|strong="G3739"\w* love, \w into|strong="G1519"\w* \w whom|strong="G3739"\w* \w believing|strong="G4100"\w* (\w not|strong="G3756"\w* \w yet|strong="G2532"\w* \w seeing|strong="G3708"\w*) \w you|strong="G3739"\w* exult \w with|strong="G2532"\w* \w joy|strong="G5479"\w* inexpressible, already \w glorified|strong="G1392"\w*,\f + \fr 1:8 \ft Anyone who has experienced this joy will agree with Peter—it definitely is not ‘natural’; it is ‘otherworldly’, a foretaste of heaven.\f* \v 9 \w obtaining|strong="G2865"\w* \w for|strong="G5590"\w* \w yourselves|strong="G4771"\w* \w the|strong="G3588"\w* \w end|strong="G5056"\w* result \w of|strong="G4102"\w* \w your|strong="G4102"\w* \w faith|strong="G4102"\w*,\f + \fr 1:9 \ft Here Peter emphasizes human responsibility; the verb ‘obtain’ is in the middle (reflexive) voice.\f* \w the|strong="G3588"\w* \w salvation|strong="G4991"\w* \w of|strong="G4102"\w* \w your|strong="G4102"\w* \w souls|strong="G5590"\w*. \s1 Salvation foretold by prophets \p \v 10 \w Concerning|strong="G4012"\w* \w this|strong="G3588"\w* \w salvation|strong="G4991"\w*\f + \fr 1:10 \ft “This salvation” presumably includes the basis and the process, as well as the result; evidently quite different from the ‘salvation’ the prophets themselves knew.\f* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w prophets|strong="G4396"\w*, \w who|strong="G3739"\w* \w prophesied|strong="G4395"\w* \w about|strong="G4012"\w* \w the|strong="G2532"\w* \w grace|strong="G5485"\w* \it that would come\it* \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w*, \w searched|strong="G2532"\w* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* inquired \w diligently|strong="G1830"\w*, \v 11 investigating \w into|strong="G1519"\w* \w whom|strong="G5101"\w*, \w or|strong="G2228"\w* \w what|strong="G5101"\w* sort \w of|strong="G4151"\w* \w time|strong="G2540"\w*, \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w Spirit|strong="G4151"\w* \w of|strong="G4151"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w*\f + \fr 1:11 \ft The Spirit of Christ was at work in the Old Testament. Is this a reference to the Holy Spirit, or did Jehovah the Son also do some inspiring?\f* \w who|strong="G5101"\w* \w was|strong="G3588"\w* \w in|strong="G1722"\w* \w them|strong="G3588"\w* \w was|strong="G3588"\w* \w indicating|strong="G1213"\w*\f + \fr 1:11 \ft Evidently Peter had access to information that we do not. However, when a prophet spoke or wrote under inspiration, he would not necessarily receive an explanation of the interpretation. Anything pertaining to the Messiah would be of intense interest, and they would certainly keep mulling over the implications—assuming a single advent, it would be hard to reconcile glory and suffering.\f* \w as|strong="G1519"\w* \w He|strong="G2532"\w* \w testified|strong="G4303"\w* beforehand \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w sufferings|strong="G3804"\w* \it that would be inflicted\it* \w on|strong="G1722"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w*\f + \fr 1:11 \ft The Text says literally, ‘the sufferings into Christ’.\f* \w and|strong="G2532"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w glories|strong="G1391"\w* \w that|strong="G3588"\w* \w would|strong="G2532"\w* \w follow|strong="G3326"\w* \w them|strong="G3588"\w*. \v 12 \w It|strong="G3754"\w* \w was|strong="G3588"\w* revealed \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w them|strong="G3588"\w* \w that|strong="G3754"\w* \w they|strong="G1161"\w* \w were|strong="G3588"\w* \w not|strong="G3756"\w* \w ministering|strong="G1247"\w* \w these|strong="G3739"\w* \w things|strong="G3588"\w* \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w themselves|strong="G1438"\w*, \w but|strong="G1161"\w* \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w*;\f + \fr 1:12 \ft The familiar ‘to us’ (TR, AV, NKJV) is based on about 14% of the Greek manuscripts, and is more congenial than “to you”; I take it that having already narrowed the focus to his addressees, Peter just keeps on going.\f* \w which|strong="G3739"\w* \w things|strong="G3588"\w* \w have|strong="G3748"\w* \w now|strong="G1161"\w* \w been|strong="G3568"\w* announced \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w by|strong="G1223"\w* \w those|strong="G3588"\w* \w who|strong="G3739"\w* \w proclaimed|strong="G2097"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w gospel|strong="G2097"\w* \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w*, \w with|strong="G1722"\w*\f + \fr 1:12 \ft The more usual rendering is ‘by’, but I do not think it fits the context. The Holy Spirit went along with the Gospel.\f* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w Holy|strong="G4151"\w* \w Spirit|strong="G4151"\w* \w sent|strong="G4151"\w* \w from|strong="G3588"\w* \w heaven|strong="G3772"\w*—\w things|strong="G3588"\w* \w that|strong="G3754"\w* angels really \w desire|strong="G1937"\w* \w to|strong="G1519"\w* \w look|strong="G3879"\w* \w into|strong="G1519"\w*.\f + \fr 1:12 \ft That is what the Text says, but I am not sure what it means. I assume that angels can read, so are they not allowed to? Or is it that they cannot really understand why the Sovereign would do something like that? Do angels have ‘soul’—emotions, ambitions, etc.? I wonder.\f* \s1 Be serious, be holy, be fearful \p \v 13 \w Therefore|strong="G1352"\w*, having girded \w up|strong="G1909"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w loins|strong="G3751"\w* \w of|strong="G5485"\w* \w your|strong="G1722"\w* \w mind|strong="G1271"\w*,\f + \fr 1:13 \ft This is obviously a figure of speech, but I wasn't sure how else to render it; in order to work, fight, run, or whatever, they would tie in their loose garments with a rope or a belt—the idea appears to be to prepare the mind for action, which would involve discipline and determination.\f* staying \w sober|strong="G3525"\w*,\f + \fr 1:13 \ft I take this phrase to be basically synonymous to the figure of speech; staying sober involves being disciplined and determined.\f* rest \w your|strong="G1722"\w* \w hope|strong="G1679"\w* fully \w upon|strong="G1909"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* \w grace|strong="G5485"\w* \w being|strong="G5547"\w* \w brought|strong="G5342"\w* \w to|strong="G1909"\w* \w you|strong="G5210"\w* \w in|strong="G1722"\w* \w the|strong="G1722"\w* revelation \w of|strong="G5485"\w* \w Jesus|strong="G2424"\w* \w Christ|strong="G5547"\w*\f + \fr 1:13 \ft In verse 7 I rendered the same Greek phrase as ‘at the revelation of Jesus Christ’, referring to His second coming, but here in verse 13 “being brought” is in the present tense, so I take the revelation to be contemporaneous. Peter gives a little more detail in his second letter, 2:4-6. “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction…” So the spirits in question are angels. Jude 6-7 refers to those same angels: “and the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these [angels], having given themselves over to fornication and gone after a different kind of flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” Recall that the men of Sodom wanted to rape the angels who were in Lot's house; whatever kind of flesh angels have when they materialize, it is not human flesh, it is precisely a different kind of flesh. So the angels in question are the ones who cohabited with women, producing the mongrel race of \ft \+it nephilim\+it* (Genesis 6:2-4). Their crime was so terrible that God incarcerated them even before Jehovah the Son became flesh and defeated Satan—they were put in cold (or hot) storage until human history played itself out. I suppose because the roles are reversed: the ark was to save Noah from the water, the water was the problem; in baptism the water is part of the solution, it saves us from something else. From what, from sin and death? Probably not. I have been given to understand that for the early Church water baptism was meant to do the following: by invoking the name of the Lord Jesus Christ the convert was placing himself under Christ's protection and repudiating Satan and the world system (with its values) and the demons controlled by him. Recall that in the New Testament water baptism followed immediately upon conversion (no weeks or months of instruction). Peter discounts the physical effect of water—the point is to appeal to God in good conscience—and goes on to the victory of Christ over death and the whole angelic hierarchy. With the same mentality we too will be committed to doing God's will, and so will avoid sin. “Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin but alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:11).
